Photowalk Alexanderplatz with Filmriss Photoclub
Inspired by Thomas Billhardt
This photowalk traces the steps of one of the GDR’s most important documentary photographers. For his iconic photo series on Alexanderplatz, Thomas Billhardt revisited the square over six decades, capturing its people, architecture, and everyday life with his unique way of seeing the city. His photographs became a remarkable visual record of Berlin’s transformation across generations.
Following in Billhardt’s footsteps, we set out on our own photographic journey through the square. In creative photo challenges, the hosts of Filmriss Photoclub, Marvin Machler and Johannes Urban, sharpen your eye for motifs and invite you to experiment.
After the walk, we visit the exhibition Thomas Billhardt: Die Augen weit offen at Fotografiska before ending the afternoon with drinks, networking, and conversations with fellow photography enthusiasts.

About the Hosts
Marvin Machler
Marvin Machler is a Berlin-based photographer focused on music, lifestyle, and social-documentary photography. Hunting for the extraordinary in the middle of the everyday rush, he is inspired by urban culture, skateboarding, basketball, concerts, and the rhythm of the city. Over the years, he has worked with several brands, festivals, artists, and creative communities. Photography is not just about aesthetics. For him, it’s about movement, people, subcultures, emotion, and creating images that make you feel like you were actually there.
Johannes Urban
Johannes is a Berlin-based graphic designer, artist, and entrepreneur working at the intersection of typography, abstraction, and visual storytelling. His practice moves between design, photography, and conceptual work. Trained at Lette Verein Berlin, he later met MarvinMachler while working in design, which led to the founding of Filmriss Photoclub – a creative platform shaped by artistic growth and community building. His photographic work explores abstraction, embracing imperfection as part of the process. He seeks to reveal the extraordinary within the everyday.
